Sølvi Ystad: Perceptual Engineering as a Means to Interpret and Manipulate Human Perception (4.11.19)

    Seminar

Our environment constantly “talks” to us, and recognizing events from sounds that surround us is generally a trivial task for most people. However, explaining how and why we are able to interpret everyday sounds or musical messages is less trivial. In this presentation, I will describe how we work on such issues and why it is useful to be able to manipulate sounds based on perceptual criteria. »Read more

Liz Dobson: Interaction, Agency and The Role of Talk in Music Technology Education (14.10.19)

    Seminar

Human development is mediated through a moment-by-moment relationship with our situation; shaped by cultural contexts, social interactions, and the use of physical tools, which are themselves developed out of the concepts that shape thinking and learning about music. Music Technology education however, is often viewed in terms of how technology is designed and the kinds of learning and creativity that it affords. Empirically, the emphasis is more often around human computer interaction. Drawing on Lev Vygotsky’s work on how our interface with the world shapes higher mental development, I will present a case for understanding the influence of human interaction and community on music technology education. »Read more

Sofia Dahl: Looking at Musical Movements (6.5.19)

    Seminar

Music and movement are intimately connected in many different ways. Both with respect to how musical sounds and rhythms are produced by players, but also how this non-verbal communication is perceived by an audience. The study of music and movement in the past decades have shown the relation to the body is important for players and listeners alike, proving music to be a multimodal experience. In this talk I will present examples of studies of musical movement from both these perspectives and discuss some of the challenges and questions that arise when studying movements in music performance. »Read more

Why are we in need of diversity in the arts sector, and what forms of diversity are we referring to? How do music spaces like festivals function as inclusionary spaces, for minority groups such as people with disabilities? In my master’s project, I am investigating how diversity and inclusion was implemented as cultural policy during the Norwegian Stoltenberg government period (2005-2013), leading to debates in present time concerning diversity in the cultural sector. »Read more
