Human development is mediated through a moment-by-moment relationship with our situation; shaped by cultural contexts, social interactions, and the use of physical tools, which are themselves developed out of the concepts that shape thinking and learning about music. Music Technology education however, is often viewed in terms of how technology is designed and the kinds of learning and creativity that it affords. Empirically, the emphasis is more often around human computer interaction. Drawing on Lev Vygotsky’s work on how our interface with the world shapes higher mental development, I will present a case for understanding the influence of human interaction and community on music technology education. »Read more

Music and movement are intimately connected in many different ways. Both with respect to how musical sounds and rhythms are produced by players, but also how this non-verbal communication is perceived by an audience. The study of music and movement in the past decades have shown the relation to the body is important for players and listeners alike, proving music to be a multimodal experience. Pamela Z's performances range in scale from small concerts in galleries to large-scale multi-media works in theaters and concert halls. Her solo works combine experimental extended vocal techniques, operatic bel canto, found objects, text, and sampled concrète sounds. Building upon my established history as a performance artist and pop musician, this keynote performance investigates new ways of costuming the foot for theatrical audiovisual expression as a ‘gesamtkunstwerk’—an all-embracing artwork that adopts and makes use of many artforms and disciplines. Through the development of a series of Computer Enhanced Footwear (CEF) prototypes, this keynote demonstrates how this gesamtkunstwerk came together through the intersection of fashionable costume design, pop music, dance choreography, lens-based work, scenography, kinesiology, sound and lighting system design and 3D fabrication practices. »Read more -
