Meeting up for the Féminisme - Musique - Technologie Conference 2021 in Paris

On the 19th of June 2021 we were invited to introduce WoNoMute at the event 'Féminisme - Musique - Technologie' which was part of the ManiFeste-2021 Festival in Paris. Hosted by IRCAM and Nova_XX/ Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles the program introduced feminist approaches from researchers and artists in the context of music, technology and digital art that are carried out in Europe. In a mix of onsite and online presentations myself and Anna Xambó had the opportunity to reflect about the WoNoMute agenda and impact.

Pamela Z Award for Innovation - NIME 2021

The Pamela Z Award winner is the author team of the paper Gambiarra and Techno-Vernacular Creativity in NIME Research from João Tragtenberg, GG Albuquerque and Filipe Calegario. Our honorary mention goes to Abby Aresty’s Changing GEAR: The Girls Electronic Arts Retreat's Teaching Interfaces for Musical Expression co-authored with Rachel Gibson.

We are happy to announce that WoNoMute is back with our workshop series for people who identify as women and non-binary! From our experience over the past two years, we have learned that there is a need for a safe space for women and girls to learn about music and technology. It’s not a secret that the field of music and technology (or technology in general) still is very dominated by men.

Pamela Z Award for Innovation - NIME 2020

This year's conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) 2020 issued the theme of Accessibility of Musical Expression. Due to COVID-19, the conference has been held entirely online and it was its first time in this format. The winner of the NIME 2020 Pamela Z Award for Innovation is Doga Cavdir for her paper co-authored with Ge Wang entitled Felt Sound: A Shared Musical Experience for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

February workshops at Popsenteret in Oslo and the Corona virus’ effect on future workshops

The spring program for WoNoMute Oslo consists of seven workshops and the first ones were held at Popsenteret, Norway's capital-based interactive museum of popular music. The next four workshops were intended to be arranged at the Department of Musicology at the University of Oslo. However, after the outbreak of the Corona virus (COVID-19) in Norway, all events at the University of Oslo have been canceled, currently until the 14 of April. But we have a plan ...

1st Anniversary of WoNoMute and Future Directions

WoNoMute stands for Women Nordic Music Technology and started in August 2018 together with the beginning of the master Music Communication and Technology, both activities supported conjointly by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and University of Oslo, in particular from the Faculties of Humanities of the two universities.

WoNoMute Oslo has started!

This semester there will be workshops hosted by WoNoMute Oslo at the Department of Musicology (IMV) and other locations in Oslo. The semester was introduced by a «sandboxing» activity the 14th of august, where students could come by and try various technology, such as Max, littleBits and other new gadgets that is developing at RITMO. There the students were also introduced to WoNoMute and the coming lectures for the semester and the workshops that during this Fall semester and the next Spring semester in 2020, will be held every month.

10th Anniversary Festival en Tiempo Real - WoNoMute Playlist

This playlist showcases the work of 11 artists from the WoNoMute network: Tone Åse, Natasha Barrett, Ane Bjerkan, Ada Hoel, Liz Dobson, Mari Lesteberg, Gyrid Nordal Kaldestad, Ximena Alarcón Díaz, Anna Xambó, Kristin Nordeval and Alex-Murray Leslie (Chicks on Speed together with Melissa Logan). This playlist celebrates 10 years of the music event Festival en Tiempo Real, and is a collaboration with her director Ana Maria Romano. The sound creations are framed within experimental, glitch, electroacoustic, electronic and contemporary, pieces where there is an encounter with technology (from an open sense). This playlist has been curated by Anna Xambó and Karolina Jawad from Ana Maria Romano's initiative, in conversation with all the playlist contributors.

NIME 2019's Pamela Z Award for Innovation

This year the NIME's Pamela Z Award for Innovation has been awarded to Margaret Schedel for her career, her work on diversity and NIMEs, and her co-authored paper 'Women's Labor: Creating NIMEs from Domestic Tools'. We have also awarded Ximena Alarcón Díaz with an honorary mention for her work on migration issues and the paper 'INTIMAL: Walking to Find Place, Breathing to Feel Presence'. Huge congratulations! Connecting through connection - A new and futuristic way of performing

In November 2018 seven female music technology performers from different parts of the world got together to give a concert and a panel debate at the Sonic Arts Research Centre in Belfast, where we would be staying for one week. The networks represented were: WoNoMute (Norway), Female Laptop Orchestra (UK), Sonora (Brazil) and Yorkshire Sound Women Network (UK).
